Regulated space is hard to get into and expensive to disturb. One thorough capture during a planned window replaces a dozen escorted measurement visits later.

Every facility has a different risk surface. We start with access, geometry density, and the decision the capture needs to unlock — then choose between laser scanning, drone mapping, or both.

Capturing hygienic and classified production space

Regulated production space is the most expensive place in any building to guess, and the hardest place to walk back into for a second measurement. The capture sequence follows the pressure cascade: dirtiest to cleanest is how people move, so the plan has to work with that rather than against it.

  1. Utilities and the mechanical floor

    Air handling units, HEPA plenums, ductwork, process and purified water loops, clean steam, and the penthouse or interstitial space feeding the suites below. This is unclassified space, it is where most of the congestion lives, and it can usually be captured on a normal working day.

  2. Corridors, airlocks, and gowning

    The circulation spine, gowning rooms, material airlocks, and pass-throughs. Door swings, interlock hardware, and the actual clear width of a MAL determine whether a new skid or vessel can physically be brought into a suite at all.

  3. Process suites and rooms

    Wall, ceiling, and coving geometry, terminal filter positions, light and sprinkler locations, room penetrations, and the equipment already in place. Wall panel systems are modular and unforgiving, so panel joint positions matter as much as room dimensions.

  4. Skids, vessels, and connections

    CIP and SIP skids, bioreactors, mixers, fillers, and the utility drops serving them, including the point where a flexible connection meets a fixed one. Replacement skids are ordered to a footprint and installed against real connection heights.

  5. Warehouse, cold chain, and packaging

    Coolers, freezers, staging, and the packaging hall — lower-classification space where the constraint is usually clear height, dock geometry, and the route a pallet takes rather than the finishes.

Gowning, cleaning protocol, and shutdown windows

Getting equipment into a classified area is a procedure, not a formality. Instruments and tripods have to be cleaned and wiped down to your protocol before they cross the line, cardboard and untreated packaging stay outside, and the crew gowns and moves in the direction your pressure cascade dictates. All of that costs time per entry, which is exactly why one thorough capture beats several return visits to check dimensions.

Most classified space is only genuinely available during a planned shutdown, a changeover, or a validated cleaning window — and those windows are short, fixed, and shared with everyone else who needs them. The realistic plan is to capture unclassified utility space, corridors, and warehouse areas on normal days, then use the shutdown window exclusively for the suites, with a route agreed in advance so no time is lost deciding where to go next. Where an area is off limits entirely, that goes in the coverage note rather than into a modeler's imagination.

What change control and engineering each need

Regulated projects have two audiences with different requirements: engineering needs geometry to design against, and change control needs documented existing conditions that can be referenced later. The same capture can serve both if the deliverable is scoped for it.

What gets missed in regulated facilities

  • Only scanning the roomThe suite is rarely the constraint. The plenum above it, the utility corridor beside it, and the mechanical floor over it are where a new duct or service drop has to fit, and they are frequently left out of a scope written around the production area alone.
  • Ignoring the route inA skid that fits its footprint perfectly and cannot get through the material airlock is a familiar and expensive story. The delivery path — dock, corridor, lift, airlock, door swing — deserves the same measurement care as the destination.
  • Reflective and washdown finishesPolished stainless, epoxy floors, glazed partitions, and wet surfaces all scatter or absorb the return signal. Hygienic environments are made almost entirely of those materials, so setup density and geometry have to compensate for them deliberately.
  • Capturing a suite mid-changeoverPortable equipment, IBCs, and cleaning trolleys that happen to be in the room become permanent features of the point cloud. Agreeing what is fixed and what is transient before the capture saves a lot of argument during modeling.

Questions from validation and engineering teams

Can equipment be taken into a cleanroom?

That is your procedure to set, and we work to it. In practice it means cleaning and wiping instruments and tripods to your protocol, leaving untreated packaging outside, gowning with the crew, and following the pressure cascade in the same direction your staff do. Where an area cannot admit equipment at all, we capture from the boundary and state the limitation.

Does this disturb a validated environment?

A tripod-mounted scanner is a passive optical instrument: it emits no particulate, needs no power connection in the room, and produces no vibration of consequence. The disturbance is the same as any escorted person walking the space with equipment, which is why the scheduling conversation matters far more than the technology one.

Can we scan during a shutdown window only?

Yes, and that is often the plan for the suites themselves. The way to make a short window productive is to capture everything unclassified beforehand — utility floors, corridors, warehouse — so the shutdown time is spent only where access is otherwise impossible, on a route that was agreed in advance.

Will the deliverable support a change control record?

It can, if that is scoped from the start. Existing conditions drawings and a registration and QA report stating the control, the residuals, the date, and what was not visible are far easier to attach to a change record than a raw cloud. What the data cannot do is speak to qualification or validation status, which stays with your quality system.
